1st June – Day 51
Up at a ridiculous time and get a taxi to the airport at 04:30. I hit the Qantas Lounge, (posing as Miss S E Bousfield as she has lent me her posh Lounge Card), then it of to Melbourne on a Boeing 767. I get 1) a whole row of seats to myself, 2) breakfast and 3) sleep before landing and meeting Matt for our AXA walk rounds.
Meet a sub-contractor and then the AXA client and walk round Melbourne for about 3.5 hours which is a bit of a shock to the old feet…! The city is beautiful, a real mix of Gothic / Colonial / and mad modern architecture which really works along side the old – but its dam cold, Fran would hate it for that reason only.
Then it’s off to the airport with Matt, obviously via the Qantas lounge posing as Miss Bousfield again, for a 737 to Canberra. We have a real good chat on the plane and then land in the capital of Oz land with this wet stuff coming out of the sky – god knows what it is, haven’t a Scooby.
We head to our hotel, it’s a 5* number and I’ve been given a suite with full kitchen, lounge/dinner, bedroom.\, balcony, (not much use in the rain), and a bathroom.
I have a very deep bath and a snooze as I am knackered, must be an age thing, before I get ready for the Black Tie FMA Awards Dinner, (facilities Management Association of Australia).
Bar by 6, drunk by 7 and then a bus to the National Australian Museum for the awards gig – its raining.
The place is wicked and we ‘mingle’ for an hour – free alcohol – before sitting down to a ‘Fair Dinkum’ dinner and some poor speeches and entertainment.
We have put in for two out of the three categories’s and although we are pleased with our submissions, did not believe that we would win the main award two years in a row.
We do…. Winners of 2006 FMA Award for Excellence & Innovation in Facilities Management, everybody is really made up, men cheer – girls cry and all is rosy on the Mowlem Asset Services table’s. Its Sarahs devised and implemented, (with one of our key clients), Risk Management Arena concept submission that wins.
Next up is an Energy Management catergory, which we havenet entered, we should have done as those who have do not hit the criteria and no award is made. The final award is for Young FM of the year…..we win – yipeee – well Matt Clugstone, who I have spent the day with, does and we are exstatic, Matt is shocked, the girls cry, the men cheer and it rains. We have wipped the floor with the awards and we are all very proud.
We listen to more speaches, drink, eat and drink before heading down to the biggest casino in Canberra where we stay untill about 03:30. Some of us leave at this point and get soaked waiting for a taxi, cos its raining. Cant remember much after that apart from how to breeth…..just.
