26th June – 2nd July – Day 76 to 82
Yes I am behind on my updates – been told off by my Wee Bruva, sorry Chris.
The week was absolutely crazy, work wise with very little play sadly – must be payback time for all the fun that that I have been having.
The company that I work for, Barclay Mowlem was sold to the Irish – Laing O’Rourke – for GBP30m, which means that I know have about the fifth business card in 8.5 years and I have never left the company that I originally signed for.
The existing MD was removed immediately and we have all been frantically updating everything from Strategy Documents to the office décor, its all been painted Green to welcome our new owners.
Laing O’Rourke, (LOR for short), are actually the largest privately owned Construction Company in the UK undertaking infrastructure, building and development operations in Europe, Middle East, India and Australia. The Group continues to deliver world class projects such as the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport, London, creating the new grandstand facilities at the internationally renowned Ascot Racecourse, the new Terminal at Dubai International Airport and the iconic indoor Snow Dome in Dubai. All established by Ray O’Rourke in his garage 30 years ago, not a bad record I suppose.
Anyway apart from meetings every minute of the day, oh and meetings at the other times to discuss why we weren’t having a meeting, has been the order of the week. We have said good bye to our departing MD and have welcomed the new men – best part about Ray O’Rourke’s opening and welcoming speech was the bit when he stated that he was not English, that went down with the Anti –POM brigade in the room…so he’s not such a bad man then.
Friday was a strange day as it was Fran and my 16th anniversary and we were apart, first time since we were legally wed which wasn’t quite correct. Anyway I celebrated, without Fran obviously, with a load of pals from work and got rather drunk – I am sure Fran would understand.
I worked most of the weekend sadly but did manage to invite a number of dear friends, Sarah and Dave, Matt, Helen & Richard, round to my unit to watch the England match which was a good laugh and a good release until the English went out and the atmosphere evaporated as everybody in the room, excluding myself, were English fans. As wee Ronny put away the last penalty for the Portuguese all my guests filed out of the unit deeply upset – I don’t think that my comment about another chance in 4 years quite helped the situation…….
