2nd October – 8th October – Days 174 to 180
Hello again all, another week in paradise has been and gone, best of all although was Saturday, 07 Oct 2006 – when Scotland stunned World Cup finalists France, (who?), at Hampden Park with a 1-0 victory that takes them clear at the top of their Euro 2008 qualifying group, with maximum points from three games. The only goal of the game was scored by defender Gary Caldwell in 67 minutes, sweeping home Paul Hartley's corner.
The first half saw the visitors dominate, (in their dreams), but a combination of determined defending and poor finishing meant the teams went in level at the break. France twice had the ball in the net but each goal was ruled out for offside, while Thierry Henry, (Arsenal failure), saw a free kick rebound from the post.
Into the second half, France seemed to run out of ideas, (no suprise there then), as they were continually frustrated by the home defence, and Scotland forced their way into the game. The stadium went wild after a second consecutive corner saw Scotland take the lead, prompting a nerve wracking final half hour.
France were in uncharted territory as they had to chase the game, and Craig Gordon made sure that none of their attempts on goal found the target. After an agonising three minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle prompted wild celebrations as Scotland kept their 100 per cent record, and France lost only their second qualifier in a decade, in fact their first away defeat since 1992. Next, Scotland face Ukraine on Wednesday in Kiev, and will be determined to keep up the momentum. Bring back the Home Internationals.
Nuff said, see you all soon, so very soon…..
